About

Welcome to indeep-project.org — the digital home of the INDEEP Project and a platform dedicated to the serious, sustained study of the world’s deep-sea ecosystems.

The INDEEP Project (International Network for Scientific Investigation of Deep-Sea Ecosystems) was established in 2011 as a global collaborative scientific network coordinated through the National Oceanography Centre at the University of Southampton, UK. For six years, funded by the Total Foundation and rooted in the legacy of the Census of Marine Life, INDEEP brought together researchers, ecologists, taxonomists, and marine scientists from across the globe with a single shared purpose: to understand the largest biome on Earth before it is lost.

That mission has not ended. It has evolved.

Today, indeep-project.org continues that work as an open platform for deep-ocean science, marine conservation research, and the urgent conversations surrounding climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable ocean governance. We are part of a global network that includes contributors and collaborators from over 115 countries, carrying forward the science and advocacy that the INDEEP Project began.

What We Address

The ocean floor is not a concept. It is a living system that is home to remarkable biodiversity, vital processes that regulate the climate, and ecosystems that have been around for millions of years but are currently in danger.

On indeep-project.org, we discuss:

The biology, ecology, and behavior of species that live in the deepest habitats on Earth, such as hydrothermal vent communities, abyssal plains, and seamount biodiversity, are referred to as marine life and deep-sea ecosystems.

Marine and Deep-Ocean Research: scientific advancements, working group outputs, methodologies, and findings from the worldwide deep-sea research community, including the work of INDEEP’s successor projects under the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI).

Climate Change and Ocean Health: the documented impacts of ocean acidification and warming on deep-sea ecosystems, the interactions between the deep ocean and global climate systems, and the conservation measures being developed in response.

Ocean Governance and Policy: This is the interface between science and policy that governs the management of deep-ocean resources, including international maritime governance, frameworks for protecting biodiversity, and regulations governing deep-sea mining.

Industry News, Technology, Finance, and Global Developments: We also publish news, updates, and commentary from a variety of fields, including green finance, environmental technology, political developments that impact marine conservation, and local stories that relate to our overarching goal. These include viewpoints and analysis from prominent figures in the field of ocean science and sustainability, as well as researchers, legislators, and advocates.
